Why You Shouldn’t Trim Your Oak Trees in January

The Danger of Oak Wilt

Oak wilt is a deadly fungal disease caused by Bretziella fagacearum. It spreads through root connections and sap-feeding beetles, which are attracted to fresh cuts on oak trees. Once infected, an oak tree can decline rapidly, often leading to death.


Why Timing Matters

Pruning creates open wounds, which serve as entry points for the fungus. While many people know to avoid trimming from February through June, when beetles are most active, research suggests that mild winter conditions can lead to early beetle activity—even in January.

Lessons Learned & Best Practices

  • Avoid pruning oak trees between January and June. The safest time for pruning is July through December.

  • If an emergency cut is necessary, immediately seal the wound with pruning paint to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Consult a certified arborist before making cuts to ensure your trees stay healthy year-round.
