Why Timing Matters

Pruning creates open wounds, which serve as entry points for the fungus. While many people know to avoid trimming from February through June, when beetles are most active, research suggests that mild winter conditions can lead to early beetle activity—even in January.

• Avoid pruning oak trees between January and June. The safest time for pruning is July through December.

• If an emergency cut is necessary, immediately seal the wound with pruning paint to reduce the risk of infection.
