Why You Shouldn’t Trim Your Oak Trees in January

At Trim That Tree, we’re not just in the business of cutting branches—we’re passionate about tree health and educating our customers on the best practices for tree care. One critical lesson we’ve learned over the years is that January is not the time to trim your oak trees.

The Danger of Oak Wilt

Oak wilt is a deadly fungal disease caused by Bretziella fagacearum. It spreads through root connections and sap-feeding beetles, which are attracted to fresh cuts on oak trees. Once infected, an oak tree can decline rapidly, often leading to death.

Why Timing Matters

Pruning creates open wounds, which serve as entry points for the fungus. While many people know to avoid trimming from February through June, when beetles are most active, research suggests that mild winter conditions can lead to early beetle activity—even in January.

Lessons Learned & Best Practices

  • Avoid pruning oak trees between January and June. The safest time for pruning is July through December.

  • If an emergency cut is necessary, immediately seal the wound with pruning paint to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Consult a certified arborist before making cuts to ensure your trees stay healthy year-round.
